If you had heard the stuff then your comments may be more objective.
Some people view his designs as a pinnacle of achievement.

The whole recorded music scene is about listening. I am an electronic
design engineer, but I have to accept that during the 1960s and 1970s
most designers built stuff that measured better than the 1950s but
sounded worse. Even today designers do not have a full set of
measurement techniques that they can apply, that correlate fully with
what people perceive they hear. We do know some measurements that are
key to good and bad performance, but our view is still limited.

I remember the days of the chief KEF designer (British Loudspeakers),
when asked what difference computers had made to the design process, he
said we now know which bucket of components to try out in the crossover
design!

Similarly, Peter Walker of QUAD fame, had a listening room at Quad.
Again people that visited declared that the sound was superb. That was
with equipment that by today's standards measured adequate at best.

The real key is that common sense applies, there are routes to good
design, but in the end the final arbiter is the listening experience.
