Hello, I'm using the digital correction since many years. I had the
same experience that you with DRC. DRC is VERY picky with the room
recordings. 90% of the time I got the sound you described. This has
steered me towards Audiolense and I passed the good news to others ex
Phil.

If you still want to try DRC try it with this nice UI:

Al Jordan knows what his is doing, read and learn. It isn't as easy as
Audyssey alignment even with Audiolense; you still have to build the
target curve. 
DRC can be very beneficial and powerful but I warn you that it takes
some time to accustom yourself to the new, correct sound.
