It costs nothing to try experimenting!

Seems entirely possible that you can get the soundstage, and imaging
you're looking for, with careful positioning, as well as perhaps some
treatment of early reflection points as others have noted.   One
needn't spend a fortune on room treatments, when a a couple of ATS
panels (as noted by DAVERZ) are placed at FRPs.   The ATS panels are
easy to look at, super affordable, and very effective!

Tilt & Toe-In of the speakers must be considered also.   Generally,
plan to adjust the Tilt & Toe-In of your speakers so as to aim the
tweeter at your ear.  Take physical measurements, and strive for
accuracy!  This can really make a big difference!

Lastly...don't forget the "Stereo Triangle"...whereas the distance
between the speakers, is exactly the same as the distance to the
listener when seated in the Sweet Spot.    It's an old concept, but it
works!
