This reply comes from the EDO-Annoucement Thread, here:

But this is ts about sound quality, which is not welcome there, so I
reply here.

Hi Larry! I agree partly with Mnyb. Connection does have an impact, in
particular on the SBT, as price and form factor demand some compromise
in many aspects: sub-obtimal clock, connectors, shielding, power supply
and more. This is however quite OK nevertheless: Its a 300 buck -
device. However, async usb is - at least in theory if you have a good
receiver and cable - less sensitive to these shortcomings.

However, why not starting with a nice DAC, and continue saving up money,
to upgrade to a usb-2-spdif interface eventually, eg hiFace Evo or
audio-gd DI (testing myself right now, still not 100% compatible, but on
its way), or one of those many others out there? I guess in this forum
you will find out, which are compatible.

For my part, as for price-to-quality-ratio, I have made very nice
experiencies, ordering audio-gd directly from china. I own a Reference
9, which is out of production now. It is something in between the
Reference 7.1. and Reference-5.2, as they are selling now. Personally,
if I was you, I would save up until affording a RE 5.2 or a 7.1. Both
look very nice, in particular, because they include PCM1704-based
multibit DAC units, nice power supply and a good DSP and input chip. The
Reference 10.2 is similar, but you get the whole package with preamp and
headphone amp. They all have a Tenor TE8802L async. USB input
(eventually to be ordered as option) that supports up to 24bit / 192khz
input. With the SBT - EDO I made them work on "Redbook" files, and I am
pretty optimistic that the higher rates will work soon, too.

So much for the publicity :) I am not associated in any way with
audio-gd... :)

Cheers
