I'm more or less sure that the spdiff standard is such that the formats
is like 16bit + 8 optional bits so some older DAC's can truncate at 20
or 16 bits or maybe it's receiving chip can understand even if the DAC
is not cabaple .
Like the SB3 and another squeezebox it's always 24bit on the oust even
using 16bit data they just stuffed 8 zeros from lsb and up .
However if you start to use the digital volume controll on the
squeezebox they come into play .
Hence with such an old DAC that may not be 24 bit I would always keep
the volume on the Squeezbox at 100%

However if get a Touch you may face the issue that spdiff is one way
protocol Touch will happily send 24/96 down the line .
You have to write a custom-convert.file to tell the server to downsample
.

On the other hand if you pick up Touch listen to it's analog output too
it migth surprise you .
