yes, it can. This said, the squeezeboxes have a very well implemented
digital volume control. The players are all receiving 24 bit stream even
though most music being streamed is 16/44.1.  So this is a good thing
for using digital volume control (the use of the extra stuff between 16
and 24). Many folks think you should keep you digital volume at about
70-75% at the lowest.  If you're at 50% volume you are certainly losing
"bits".  This may not (probably not) audible, but it is happening.  I
like using the digital volume control. I set the preamp volume control
such that with the SB player at 100% volume it is a bit louder than I'd
ever listen. Then I back off on the digital volume down to as low as 70%
and adjust up and down accordingly for my casual listening (90% of my
listening time). If I'm doing "serious" listening, I set digital volume
to 100% and do all volume control with my preamp.
