Now that we already blown Dennis55 tread to pieces ..... Sorry . What about good enough power supply good enough mechanics and good enough analog circuitry :) if you make it low distortion flat frequency response and low noise it will be transparent to humans , the oppo is a good example .
But things accumulate so making even better specs is not entirely pointless seen in a whole system perpective , I'm just not buying the premise that money always buys significantly better performance practice shows that performance could be equal or worse in many cases . And also build quality is a factor in this area some brands excell and others don't ,but speaking of experience none of my cheap stuff fails it is always the high end or mid-fi stuff ? And there is the economics of scale if the market for Meridian hifi where 100 time bigger my own hifi would probably cost 1/10 of what it does , but would it get these rave reviews ;) No ( it would sound as good as ever ). But wait ,looking at it there is no actual evidence that high end actually buys you better circuitry many products does not do better than average and some considerably worse than for example oppo . In fact in many cases the opposite ,the niche brands have to use smaller series of older stuff . and also factor in the usual expensive anachronism that gets the price higher without getting you any performance . Over doing the boxes cosmetically yes the box is the most expensive part in some cases but the manufacturer would never admitt that . Archaic expensive technology that performs worse aka vacuum tubes besides there own shortcomings you also get expensive high voltage supplies and a circuit with inheritly low power supply rejection ratio , when a cheap OP and more humble supply gets you better stuff at 1/1000 of the cost . But back on topic besides being expensive Linn is not total hacks they do real technology :) actually these days they have toned down some of the jargon and silliness from yesteryears superficially they seems to design according to established science and not to much voodo nowadays .
