Lately I've been exploring the world of 24/192 music. So far I must say that I have yet to encounter a 24/192 track where there looked like there was any musical content >50kHz!
I know of course one cannot hear up in those registers, but I'm not even seeing anything that looks musical at all... In fact, I'm concerned about the risk of intermodulation distortion in some of the stuff I've bought. For example, the other day I downloaded Wycliffe Gordon's "Dreams of New Orleans" 24/192 from HDTracks (love these binaural recordings by the way!). Check out the attached frequency analysis (average for the song "Down By The River"). Notice the amplitude of frequencies >50kHz up to -48dB! Just pure noise. Needless to say, I resampled this down to 24/96 for the music server. Considering that this track is $7.00 more expensive for the 24/192 vs. 24/96, it's a total rip off!
