I have not researched how they work ,but a digital out must not
necessarily be a pass trough with intact bit and sample rate .
For non audiophile use I bet it could actually be seen as "feature" if
it just works on everything .
But I also doubt that an iPhone has CPU enough to do this and if does it
it must be with some really compromised algorithm ?
So a bit of a mystery .

My gues is some other gross technical problem or user placebo , but it
is a gues I have not seen this kind of dock irl or used one.
