The second generation Airport is a nice device. It has a native and clean 16/44.1 digital output that should be the majority of files most users own. So it may be a worthwhile digital transport, why not? The HiRes files you have you can resample yourself to 16/44.1 for daily use and don´t let Airport do it. At least that is how i would use it.
But having to use iTunes!? No and never.
