Well for now, the Touch refuses to cooperate with my only USB DAC
capable of hi-res (Essence E1) so can't even attempt to provide any data
on the sound of USB on my system. I'm getting a USB --> SPDIF converter
soon so maybe I can run some measurements through that and see.

As for the TosLink vs. coaxial question, as far as I can tell, with my
Touch --> E1, they measure equivalently up to 24/96 (+/- 2dB dynamic
range and noise floor, low THD) even with a *really crappy* toss-away
RCA zip cord as per page 3 of this thread: "MEASUREMENT: Logitech
Squeezebox Touch as transport! (Part I)". By 24/192, the TosLink
(surprisingly!) beat out the coaxial on my setup marginally and the
cheap RCA revealed itself as clearly inferior. Note that successful
24/192 over TosLink is somewhat rare so good equipment matching is
essential. Also, this is an area where a good quality coaxial cable
makes a *measurable difference* in terms of shielding from electrical
noise and ensuring accurate data integrity.

Ultimate, we're talking a few dB difference down below -100dB (with
decently shielded coaxial & TosLink)! Personally speaking, it's
unlikely my ears can tell even though the differences are clearly
measurable. Also, who knows how different gear interacts with each
other...
