They are devoid of actual content aside from tags and art, and do not
play anywhere. Or rather they "play", in the sense that they progress
through an empty file, counting down the time.

I suspect the problem arose from some difficulties I encountered with
the dBp rip function after installing a new server. dBp ripper produced
error messages and said rip was unsuccessful, but sometimes created
files, which I think were like these problematic ones.  There were two
problems, the main one being that the server archive's drive letter was
set as lower case d, but the dBp writing path had upper case D. This
appeared to abort the rip, but not until the file structure had been
created on my primary archive. In this case I seemed to have copied the
"empty" files from the primary archive to the server.

Just to be clear, I use the multi rip function to rip all at once to
three locations, two in flac and one 320 mp3. 

A re-rip solved the problem.
