On a related note but revealing a very different reason for people's inability to apply critical thinking is the book and documentary "Merchants of Doubt" (http://www.merchantsofdoubt.org/ and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3675568/). Although I only just started reading the book and have not yet seen the film I do understand the general premise which is that by casting what on the surface appears to be reasonable doubt upon well established science one can get many people to ignore the science. Very closely related to high end audio's use of FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt). So basically if one can find even a tiny crack in an otherwise very valid piece of science then one can get people to disregard all of the science.
