And men have the advantage of having and developing that brain/hearing tool called "the last sentence buffer" so that whatever he happens to be doing something that to him is more important than listening to whatever his wife is saying he can repeat back the last of sentence of whatever she said should she happen to say "Are you even paying attention to anything I just said?"
