High end audio's dirty little secret: Real world electronically reproduced audio chain: Performers produce sound waves -> microphone converts sound waves into electrical signal -> electrical signal travels through various pieces of audio equipment -> transducers (aka speakers) convert electrical signals back into sound waves The "secret" part is that in the middle of this chain (the electrical signal travels through various pieces of audio equipment part) there is no "audio" but rather just an electrical signal and believe it or not electrical engineers have a pretty understanding of how electrical signals and signal processing works, especially things like amplifying these signals. All the real action occurs during the first and last parts of the chain converting sound waves into electrical signals and converting electrical signals back into sound waves.
