When we discuss subjective dynamic range, we need to remember that audio data well below the LSB is audible on properly dithered digital system. Characterizing 16 bits as having 96 dB dynamic range does not include this fact. If you include this effect, then the subjective dynamic range of 16 bits is well in excess of 96 dB.
