I often read about complaints from people using couriers for delivery,
mostly online purchases from the US. These are almost always about a
"surprise" fee on delivery because they didn't read the delivery
conditions and didn't understand that a brokerage fee might be applied.
They are also surprised or don't understand that the courier adds in
sales tax, as they are required to do. Some US vendors use UPS or Fedex
options that already include the clearance fees but many don't,
particularly when they don't ship very much to Canada. You can argue
about the size of the brokerage fee at times, but it's a legitimate
charge. Free trade eliminates duty but all the usual border clearance
procedures still apply and there are fees.
