This can manifest as a pre-echo as the magnetic pattern on the tape transfers slightly to the adjacent layer. It becomes noticeable when a very quiet passage precedes a very sudden loud passage.
A friend pointed out to me the print-through in the intro to 'Sledgehammer' by Peter Gabriel. I also discovered print-through on 'Tyler' by UB40 (the first track on their classic Signing Off album).
