Just to speak up - yes I'm / we at Munich (LiMux project) are still
installing our Debian-based distribution using FAI and ro NFSv4 NFSroots
+ aufs tmpfs for rw.

Currently I'm using Debian SID and 2.6.26.7 based Debian kernel + aufs
20081006 to run the installation.

Since we plan to release a major update in the next two weeks I don't
think I'll update the AUFS patch again. The current version works for us,
but I'll definitely provide some feedback, if future versions don't work
anymore with NFSv4.
