Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) is based on linux-2.6.28 - -
I am also building linux-2.6.29 and linux-2.6.30 (for C7-M) and
running the 9.04 install with them.

So you could either run your 8.04 installation with a newer kernel,
or just change your links in apt/sources.list and let the system
do a dist-upgrade.
