Let me make sure again.
- with -i, remount process exits.
- and all other operations, ls(1) or something, worked correctly.

If so, I'd want you to test these commands just before remount /etc.

1.
# auplink /etc cpup
# mount -ino remount,noxino,ro /etc

2.
# auplink /etc flush
# mount -ino remount,noxino,ro /etc
