Don't forget you can checkout some other kernel git, eg the smaller releases tree. Then with a small script you can very easily create branches, merge the appropriate patch and commit. This will give you you something similar to before. Possibly git hooks could even be used to do this automatically? Does this work for you? It requires a tiny bit of scripting, but should be workable?
