I guess my assumption the 3.x-rcN is closer to 3.1 than 3.0 is wrong.
Indeed the 3.0 branch compiles fine with the 3.1 kernel.
Maybe 3.x-rcN should be renamed to something emphasizing that the `rcN' part is 
the important part. Or just write it clearly in the instructions.
