Aufs-util is essentially necessary in every system where aufs is used. The most important things are /sbin/mount.aufs and /sbin/umount.aufs which maintain the aufs pseudo-link and /etc/mtab. If you don't care about them, then you may be able to choose not to install them. See the aufs manual and the aufs-util README file in detail. J. R.
