There's no strict need to use pacman -Rdd here, that part is not that relevant.

True, but what is the usecase for the sudo-ra package then?
From a security perspective I'd recommend removing sudo when switching to sudo-rs. Otherwise the system still contains potential security vulnerabilities shipped with the sudo package, in addition to the ones shipped by the sudo-rs package.

The sudo-rs package is not meant to be a drop-in replacement of the sudo package (for now at least). There are still a fair amount of sudo features that sudo-rs does not support (and eventually never will). So there are valid use cases to keep them both. If you prefer to remove sudo completely and make the sudo-rs binary replace it, that's your choice. But there will be some cases where one will inevitably hit a wall by doing so. So, despite what you may think, the sudo-rs package is not meant to fully replace the sudo package (not yet at least, time will tell if this wil ever happen). As a matter of fact, note that the sudo-rs package neither provides nor conflicts sudo.

The point is that this package doesn't bring much. A simple /usr/ local/bin/sudo symlink pointing to /usr/bin/sudo-rs would basically achieve the same (then removing the sudo package from the system is users' choice). We require package submitted the AUR to be (somewhat) useful [1]. This one is arguably not (given the same result can basically be achieved with a simple symlink).

This is not true. Even if the user could remove the package in a recommended way (not -Rdd), this renders the sudo-rs package useless, because it misses at least a PAM configuration.

Which is provided by the sudo-rs optional dependency on... the sudo package [1].

You're just trying to do something unexpected / unsupported (yet at least). Again, sudo-rs is not meant to fully replace sudo as of now.
