I have a HUD in my car. It tells me speed, and gives basic directions. It is a
proper HUD - actually reflecting off the windscreen.

I love it! Can’t tell you how much it does NOT distract.

Following is a shortly thought about, personal opinion, with no evidence at
all. Just my own ideas and opinions.

And I am a huge believer in audio - I use an Audio FLARM, and I care far more
about my audio vario - don’t even have a mechanical vario.

So a HUD should be REALLY simple. 2 numbers at most and maybe an arrow. Maybe
height and speed (air speed in cruise, or 30 second average in climb).

I think one day we will start to see a very advanced HUD that will know where
we are looking and where we are facing - to flash and show where other aircraft
are (assuming we all end up one day with a universal locator, which is also
something I believe will be near future). We can do all this now, its just the
price is high, and as usual, the great thing about standards - is there is so
many to choose from.

People said a GPS would distract, but from what - maps? People say a flight
computer distract - but again, it means you spend MORE time looking out. I
believe a HUD will do the same, but it will be done wrong - the first 10 times
:)

I love the future - sorry, the present - we have so much to look forward to.
Innovation and experimentation. Yay for the wonderful people here and elsewhere
that are building and inventing and debating this stuff, while others are
keeping an eye to safety. It is exactly what we all need.

Maybe watch the personal insults, but otherwise - keep up the awesome debate :)

Scott
