Richard has got it basically right as far as I can see. However it is (of 
course), all a bit more subtle than that. There are two emergency scenarios 
that revolve about the boots. In the first scenario the boots are very well 
fixed to machine, so it is of course totally impossible to fall off. In this 
scenario you end up with two broken ankles, or two broken legs, and then you 
die. In the second scenario  the boots can easily break away, and then you 
depart the device and die.

with help from my old mate Chicken Little (of the sky is falling in fame).
