Bruce,

Years ago Martyn Roberts and I flying the AUGC Bergfalke left a thermal over Coopers
Creek in SW Queensland at 13,000'. The vario was still stuck on the top stop, but we
didn't have oxygen :-( The cu's were forming a great deal higher - I suspect over
20,000'. During the climb we achieved 2,000'/minute (we timed it on a watch - the
Bergy only had a mechanical vario). We centered the thermal by judging rate of
rotation of the altimeter.

On another occasion I have descended through cu's at 26,000' on descent into Moomba in
a King Air. From there on it was a rough ride down.

Given a glider with oxygen in the NE of SA or SW Qld I believe a diamond height would
be attainable on quite a few days each summer.

    Redmond
