Another interesting flight demonstrating the variety we can have here. The
day startet with a moderate to fresh north / westerly. Had 1/2 hour in weak
wave, gaining and loosing 500 feet. While in that wave a trough line
approached from the south, stretching from well east of Port Phillip bay to
the horizon in the west, must have ended somewhere above the Grampians.
First thought we wouldn't reach the associated roll cloud but the lift
started well ahead of it. We commenced with very smooth 2 kts, quickly
building to 4 - 5 - 6 kts. When shifting under the leading edge the ride
really started. The vario firmly leaning against the upper stop and straight
ahead - go west young man. We were flying our K 13, 80 kt max rough air
speed, pulled out the breakes to stay at the 4,500 ft alloted to us by the
airspace powers. We just could not fly fast enough and the roll cloud
advanced north swiftly above tiger country. Did not want to be stranded
there at that altitude with the old girl and turned to go home downwind of
the cloud. I had about 3 times the height I needed to get home but for about
five minutes had a somewhat accelerated pulse when the vario was at the stop
again - but on the downside. It fortunately lasted a few minutes only and we
even had a bit of a climb under the clag behind the trough. After 1 1/2
hours brought the glider back down in almost dead air.
