Thanks to John Welsh for providing the actual information about the
accident, to the extent that FACTS can be provided at this stage.
As for the comments, I know who Maurice Little, Brian Wade, Greg Quick,
Chris Thorpe and Peter White are, and what their credentials are. I also
have my own view on the subject of high and low tow immediately after
take-off. Maybe a good topic for a separate debate.
But who is this Allan Garrity fellow who offers quasi-legal advice from what
looks suspiciously like a long way off? What is the relevance of the
"OJ"? - it is most certainly NOT VH-GOJ.
I was disappointed to hear the original TV news item last night refer to a
HANG GLIDER pilot and then show some fairly relevant sailplane photos, and
hear the QUITE MEANINGLESS term "joy flight" quoted. Thanks to JW for
correcting these false impressions.
Also disappointing to see the TV news crew on site to film the unfortunate
pilot (presumably it was he that they filmed) being loaded into an
ambulance, and film of a tow rope and rings being held for the camera and
the nose of a glider showing the hook. [Was the footage of an L23 Super
Blanik? I am not familiar enough to recognise the type from the TV footage.
Was it the aircraft involved, or another glider altogether?]
Whilst the TV stations may often have file footage of things like gliding
activities, I suggest that we are not helping anyone if we afford access to
accident sites to film crews, or give them anything more than the direct
facts and a statement that the event is being (or will be) investigated by
the proper authorities (without naming them lest we get the wrong ones).
