Jeremy,

Thank you for your comments. At the last meeting of RAPAC, my understanding of the **latest** model was that the "small CTAF's" that we have now were to go and be replaced by Designated Aircraft Frequencies (DAF) or "Big CTAF's" (with small Airfield Traffic Zones (ATZ's) where required). These big CTAF's reminded me of the old large Airspace Flight Information Zones **in area** (you are technically correct; they are not the same).

I cannot recall the CTAF's remaining as well as DAF's and looking up the web-site

and downloading the pdf files comes up with hard to read information.  The presentation at the meeting by David Fon-Lowe was easier to understand as a power point presentation but looks like I have not completely grasped the concepts. I will endeavour to get the power point files up on the web.

+Another big issue for the gliding movement is the proposal that all VFR aircraft flying in the DAF above 5000FT would broadcast their position every half hour, GFA have already lodged a protest with Airservices, I am hopeful that we will get exemption as we have in previous years when similar ideas were floated. Airservices have already given us exemption to not carry a transponder when flying in Class E airspace.

There was no mention of that at the meeting or in Bob Hall's (GFA Vice President) submission.  I will cc this to Bob Hall GFA (Vice President).

However, I think an ATZ at Caboolture would be a bloody nuisance.  We would have to have facilities in all our two seaters to change frequencies from the back seat; can anyone quote on the cost for doing that?

PS Do you want to join me on the RAPAC committee?

Peter,

Just a few notes on my observations on the LAMP proposals

+ It is not like the old AFIZ's at all, just a very big CTAF which is being tested in the NT at the moment, eg 3 CTAF cover about half the NT.

+CTAF and MBZ still exist, only the frequency is the same as the DAF.

+ATZ will only be created where there is to many aerodromes within a small area with only VFR traffic, they will be as few as possible, the basic concept is to have all aircraft on the same frequency.
I think the worst case scenario for us would be if Caboolture was made an ATZ, however I think it is unlikely.

+Mandatory calls within CTAF and MBZ remain the same as they are now.

In summary the main issue is the mandatory reporting, if Caboolture was a ATZ it would not be the end of the world, just a minor inconvenience, the head of the project told me that the only place where they were considered was an area just south of Melbourne with about 6 aerodromes mainly with ultralight operations within a 30nm radius.

Subject: [aus-soaring] Airspace changes

At the last qld RAPAC meeting on the 22nd May, the LAMP (Lower level Airspace Proposal) for Australia was presented again.  Essentially, it is back to the future like the old AFIZ's but these are to be called DAF's (Designated Area Frequencies) or "Big CTAF's"  with ATZ (Airfield Traffic Zones) over airfields, the proposed limits of ATZ's being 3nm radius and 1500 feet AGL.

I have volunteered for the nitty gritty planning for Qld. and have proposed (and favourably received so far) that all gliding fields to be NOT in ATZ's so that we can remain on the DAF frequency with the proviso that glider pilots and all pilots be educated to minimise their circuit calls.  There are no mandatory airfield circuit calls. Calls in the circuit are only necessary for separation once the mandatory inbound call to a CTAF (at present) and airfield is made.

Any comments and requirements for local gliding fields in Qld. please contact me directly at this address [EMAIL PROTECTED]
