Down at Bunyan (Canberra GC) we deal with ATC quite regularly in wave
season. We can negotiate a good "block clearance" arrangement up to FL200
but to get into the serious stuff above that requires a bit of conversation
with Melbourne at the time. They are invariable helpful and accommodating,
and we get NOTAMS issued for wave camp etc, but of course we are not the
only ones around. Those who've had the experience tell me it's pretty
frustrating to be held below FL200 in fading wave and watch the diamond go
begging because some 737 wants to use the bit of air.

Subject: [aus-soaring] Controlled airspace

Controlled airspace is a great place to visit. I guess us glider pilots give
the controllers something different to worry about! I remember being given a
block clearance from Gawler to Jamestown and return (the only instructions,
not above FL120, report turning Jamestown).

Have access to controlled airspace can make cross country flights easier.
The worst that can happen is that clearance is denied, or that clearance is
ammended once inside controlled airspace.

Cheers,

Michael
