Jason,

The IGC approved FR with built in GPS  has basically taken over this
market. You would be amazed at the number of would be World Record and
World comps pilots there are out there.

It also says something about whether expense is a factor in gliding.

If the IGC ever gets sensible we have a nice design for a Garmin 35 based
FR (a G35 with a single potted circuit board glued under it). No pressure
altitude, just GPS altitude which B2000 testing has revealed to be very
good indeed and engine run detect by detecting the engine master circuit
being turned on(requires wire connection). About A$700 including GST.

Meanwhile we sell the Garrecht Volkslogger IGC Approved FR for about A$1400
including GST. You can do all badges and records with one of these. See
www.garrecht.de

A good solution would be for the GFA to accept Garmin Tracklogs or the
"attach to GPS serial data recorder" mentioned here a few weeks ago  for
badge flights and Australian records.
