Even if the Mildura glasshouse doesn't get off the ground - and I'd be interested in the greenies reaction to nearly 20 sq km of land under glass monoculture - the other power station proposed for the Cooper Basin might produce good thermals.
This is a proposal for a hot, dry rock geothermal station which involves 3km deep shafts into hot subterranean granite expected to be about 200deg C. Air is circulated through the shafts and fractured rock layers and then passed through a boiler for a steam turbine (initial proposal IIRC). While a closed system would be most efficient, I would expect there to be a short stack which would be a good thermal source and wouldn't require a 3000 ft plus tow to catch. There isn't a gliding operation at Moomba yet but it might turn out to be quite suitable - until it comes to landing out.
