For what its worth, I agree with the above sequence, for the reason 
that I was first given about using that sequence - because it helps 
avoid problems of the sort suggested above, and also because its 
consistent with the 'normal' exit sequence from the aircraft, i.e. 
open canopy and then release harness.

The point here is that under duress, we're all most likely to fall 
back to what we've reinforced the most in training terms. Including 
opening the canopy and then releasing the harness.

So I've always made sure not to release the harness before the canopy 
is open, precisely to ensure that this is (also) going to be the 
sequence that I use in the (hopefully) unlikely event of having to 
bail in flight.
