Mike is not quite correct.  There are exams, but they are
verbal, administered by your instructor.  The emphasis is on
the student demonstrating that he/she understands the item
being tested, rather than a pure pass or fail. In other
words, the student doesn't fail, but may need considerable
discussion with the instructor until he/she demonstrates
proper understanding.
This is in conformity with the "Competence based training"
approach which has no prescribed number of hours to go solo
etc.  It is interesting that CASA is now looking at this
type of training for the proposed Sports License.
Theory is fairly basic. The required syllabus is covered in
the "Basic Gliding" book sold by GFA.
