That's a complete misrepresentation of this discussion.
If a club has chosen a certain direction for itself, and if achieving
that direction is rendered impossible by the attitudes or actions of
a few individual members, then the club is better off without those
members.
It makes no difference whether they're 70 or 17. If they're sabotaging
the efforts of the club to build itself up, then frankly they're using up
oxygen which could be put to better uses.
I'll repeat what I've said many times over the last few years: If a
club has worked out that in its present form it is not attractive to
new members, then it can't blame changes to society for that, it can
only blame itself for not being attractive. The club has to choose
between making major changes to its structure and makeup to achieve
that aim, or dying.
If the club chooses a direction intended to enhance its attractiveness,
and achieving that direction is resisted by the "old guard" (who are,
necessarily, part of the problem if the current shape of the club is
not attracting members), then the "old guard" must go. After all, they're
the ones who have spent years getting the club into a position where
nobody new wants to join it, right?

Your word, not mine.
I'm interested to know what part of the text above you disagree
with. Perhaps I'm overly simplistic, but it all sounds pretty
straightforward to me.
