To Cambridge GPS-NAV logger users that are about 4
years or more old
Now I have your attention with this awful yellow could users/owners of
Cambridge GPS-NAV(the black box) read the voltage of the internal 3 volt cell at
the next start up of this instrument. If the voltage is 2.8 volts
or less then it should be replaced as soon as
possible. The original battery is 2325 (23mm diameter and
2.5mm thick) and is now available in Australia at Tandy and other stores for
about $6. If you can not get this cell then 2030 (20mm dia and 3mm
thick) will fit in the holder with a bit of space round the sides.
Now to replace this cell without loosing the seal remove the top cover or
antenna then power up the unit from an external
12volt supply. With small watch type screwdriver or match (is
insulated) slide out the old battery and slide in the new cell. If you can
double side tape a bit of firm foam to antenna so that it holds battery in
place especially if you use the non standard cell- if you have a dreaded
mid air then we hopefully do not loose the data of flight. Replace the
cover/antenna and remove the 12volt supply - the job is done and you still have
a sealed Logger!!!!. Now if Simon Brown had no trouble replacing his battery
while at recent Queensland comps with my brief verbal instructions then so
can you!!!!.
Now if you leave in a flat battery (2.7v or below) you risk loosing the
electronic seal. If seal is lost then it must be returned to Bruce Taylor
or myself for battery replacement and resealing numbers which must come
overnight from Cambridge in USA
So please check that internal battery before you fly with your
logger. PLEASE!!!! This will save unnecessary shipping loggers
around the country side for re sealing. By the way I find loggers tend to
drift a bit with height calibration, but once re calibrated this is usually
accurate for 4 years or so. If going to comps where airspace can be a
problem then it may be worth having a new calibration done (I have a
chamber) on the logger AND KEEPING A COPY OF SAME UNDER ANTENNA so you
always have it.
That's all except if you know users not on this list you may forward
to them.
