I was not looking forward to the service for a 27 year old girl - Lucy's farewell.  When I arrived I thought this may be a little different.  There were displays of Lucy's life.  I learnt she was the youngest Ski instructor in NZ at the time and topped her year at Law at University.  The service started with Lucy singing a traditional Maori song then followed a spectacular electronic slide show. Views were of where Lucy had been and had seen in her life.  Brett Iggulden told us of the life of Lucy who he had known since age 3.  She never went to regular school up to age 10 instead traveling around USA in a Kombi with her parents. She was a powerful debater and after law school went into acting. Regretfully one boyfriend died in a ski accident and another drowned in Fiji. Unfortunately she had experience with young people funerals and had time to think about her own service.   Brett only had boys and Lucy became his "daughter" as she would often visit Bellingen and Byron Bay over the next 20 years.  The service ended with I think four powerful talks by Lucy looking at us straight in the eye.  Messages included how to live our life to the fullest  and how having fatal disease turned her life around and was something special.  It left us all saying Woo - that was powerful - that was some special girl.  She only had praise for all her doctors.
As her father said she never had the opportunity to organise her wedding - instead she organised her own very special farewell service. Evidently the messages were recorded mid 2003 and as Gavin said he was on the video and all of a sudden he was hearing these special messages from his daughter and thought this is powerful stuff.  Brad Edwards,  Brett Iggulden and Giles Taylor (her Aussie doctor) and myself sat around to the wee small hours of the morning - well what are we going to do with the rest of our lives?

I pass this on to gliding people as until the last VHS club video dies in 20 years time we will see Lucy learning to fly or promoting our sport on those rainy days. Many people from around the world replied back to me and I urge you to email Gavin [EMAIL PROTECTED]  Lucy's mum Ann lives separately but sure it will get passed on. I particularly noticed how many of those that sent on their kind thoughts also had lost a son or daughter and would now feel for Gavin.

I now have a regret that I did not chat to Lucy a little more when she was around as she was a real special girl.
