G'Day,
Are there any clubs in Australia using a winch which has more than 2 drums?
How is the drum selection mechanism designed?
(Are there any pilots who have driven a 'busio' style winch? How is each drum isolated/selected?)
The Colorado Soaring Assoc. has a brilliant PDF (see the link below) which discusses in detail, the requirements for building a fantastic gliding winch (6 drums). In this document there is a section entitled "Drum(s), Dog Clutches and Retrieve Brakes".
Can anybody think of (or refer me to an example of) the dog type clutches that the author refers?
I believe that the idea of running multiple drums from a single 'master drive shaft' is a great one, but I can't think of or find a real life example of how to build the drums (clutch inside the hub or external...)
