Subject: Junior Nationals
Hello everyone
As you have all heard from Adam, everything is gearing up for the Junior Nationals (Joey Glide 2004) to be held at Temora from 5 - 11 December 2004. This will be the first dedicated Junior Nationals and we are hoping to set a great example of support and encouragement from non-junior pilots in Australia for this event.
Many pilots are just as excited as the juniors at the prospect of such an
event in Australia and have been asking how they can contribute and be a
part of it. You can support Joey Glide 2004 in several ways:
* Offer to donate your glider to a suitably qualified junior pilot for
the duration of the event;
* Offer to crew for a junior for the duration of the event;
* Offer to assist to run the competition or provide assistance in the
preparation of the competition;
* Provide sponsorship for the event;
* Provide sponsorship for a particular junior (perhaps from your local
club) to attend the event; * Provide assistance to the competition organisers or a particular
junior to obtain sponsorship.
I am sure there are other ways you can provide assistance and we are happy to hear your ideas if you can help in any way. Sponsorship in particular can be provided in a number of ways and I know there are a lot of people who are keen to assist in their own way. It is very encouraging to see this level of support in Australia.
Examples include sponsoring the winners trophy and or prize (it would be great to have prizes...) or day trophies and prizes.
We are also looking for business that are keen to provide sponsorship which may be in the form of money, sponsorship in kind or merchandise such as that used for marketing purposes. For example, when I competed in the World Junior Gliding Championships we received some form of merchandise at briefing every day from lollies, keyrings, hats and t-shirts. It may sound silly now, but at the time it made the juniors at the competition feel special and like they were part of something very big and important. After one particularly hard day of flying in difficult conditions and literally flying from outlanding option to outlanding option for the whole task, I received a t-shirt when handing in my data logger and was told that it was the prize for everyone who made it home that day (less than half the field). It felt really good to get the t-shirt and made me feel like I achieved something good that day. I still have the shirt 4 years later and it reminds me of what I achieved that day. It would be great to be in a position to do something similar for our juniors so if you own a business, or work for a business that is in a position to provide sponsorship please let me know and we can discuss details and what the juniors can offer you in return (such as publicity etc).
Part of my role is to compile a spreadsheet of those owners of gliders who are prepared to donate (or hire reasonably) their gliders to juniors for the event. I am developing a list of juniors including their experience levels for this list am looking for gliders to match them up to. We are looking for gliders within the performance range of libelle/astir through to ventus and are capable of holding water ballast. While it is a handicapped comps and there are other gliders around, we are keen to keep the performance spread of gliders within a set range so that the juniors can fly around together as much as possible rather than one having to always fly ahead on their own in a nimbus 2 and another always being left behind in a PW5. A goal of the comp is to encourage them to fly at comps and have fun together in a manner where they can reasonably compare their performance at the end of the day. If you have a glider you can donate please let me know with the details and your requirements for the pilot in command. If you are interested in donating your glider but do not have insurance for a low hours pilot, please also let me know as we are hoping for sponsorship of insurance for such purposes for the duration of the comp.
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.
