Now let's get this straight - the original canopy locking mechanism is
deficient in that it can cause the canopy to open in a spin.

So there is an added on kludge to fix this.(certified/STC'd???)

So if you are sensibly wearing parachutes while deliberately spinning you
have made it take longer to open the canopy.

Of course you are doing this spin exercise at high altitude and have agreed
upon a minimum altitude where if the glider is still spinning or otherwise
out of control you will depart?

This last would have likely saved the lives of the two pilots in the Blanik
at Narromine.

I think what we have here is "safety theatre".

One other thing that is missing in this whole spinning thing is the right
of informed adults to decide on the level of risk they wish to take. Many
experienced pilots are not happy about doing full spins in annual checks
and I'd suggest it is their right to refuse if they have decided the
exercise in their opinion has risks that outweigh the benefits.

As for descending quickly - that's what dive brakes are for. Many turn
spins may not have been tested as part of the certification process. Using
the brakes has the benefit that you can take avoiding action if another
aircraft appears.
