Yes Patch!
As I recollect when I was a young lad, pulley launching worked well up to a
point on one occasion, when the F100 ute towing cable and being driven back
towards the Kookaburra glider on launch, was driven over the cable rising
off the ground as the Kooka soared up the launch.  The cable snagged the
drivers side door handle.  Yes, there was a lot of sawing going on that day

Michael,
We used a reverse pulley system at Bacchus Marsh for some years back in the
60's. Great system, on one day we launched I think nine gliders before the
first one landed, no lift conditions. Very fast very simple and safe.
