In response to this email from Daryl,  I think the foam that Bill Whitehand arranged for the Beverley Fleet was Confor foam , not Dynafoam as stated, but its probably the same stuff.

Hi,

Try the following:

Dynafoam in GB, Sunmate in the USA. 1 inch Dynafoam cushion - ACFT Upholstery Services (08) 9353 3932

Bill Whitehand arranged the importation of same into WA when he was CFI of BSS. It has been fitted to the seat cushions of all our club gliders and many private owners took up the opportunity too. It has also been fitted to the pax seats of at least one Commuter Airline type over here and that required an Engineering Order that gives the process some importance in mainstream commercial ops.

This is so important that I will dump some notes I have on you all. They are condensed from a series of fine articles by Dr. Tony Segal that every pilot should read, if only to verify my understanding in the notes below taken from those articles:

Lumber Support - 10 1/2 inches x 4 inches x 1 inches, with the long edges next to the pilot chamfered off.

The parachute pack should be thin, flexible, and have a soft lower border. If the parachute pack has a hard lower border and ends part of the way up the spine, a stress concentration will be present at this level, and a spinal fracture may occur on accident impact

Each headrest must not be less than 250mm wide, must be faced with energy absorbing material, and must be capable of withstanding an ultimate load of 3kN acting normal to its face.

Each headrest must be located at eye-level, and such that it protects the occupant whether wearing a parachute or not, and that it does not foul the parachute during an emergency exit.

Note: It is recommended that where possible headrests are mounted integrally with seatbacks.

Can anybody give me a lead on where I can get hold of impact absorbing seat cushion foam?

Thanks,
