This is my pet topic and I could only recommend the right foam and ALL other cushions and pillows should be burnt - I did that 15 years ago at Keepit. Also I still remember the day (Jan 31 1975) when Elane Morgan took off with with 3 pillows behind her and 2 behind her in Bocian and some how lost it on aerotow and became inverted and went in in inverted spin.  A few years ago we had an ex Singapore captain who conned his way thru an aussie aviation medical (he left SAL because of blackouts I since found out) anyhow on a perfect circuit on final he suddenly went into a WW2 60 deg dive to the ground and crashed.  He had back injuries but the seats were 2 grades of pink suntuff?? slow realease foam and as a doctor friend said that would have saved him.  During a clean up of hangars when I was sick this $150 (2 seats) of foam was thrown out - can you believe!!!  Am I upset at stupit people and they think it is a bit of a joke!!.  I have since been buying the foam from Aircraft spruce at $US20 a pad plus post but am more than happy to buy in Australia if people have the right stuff.  Please everybody re look at your cushions and do something if they are not up to standard - you can not put a price to save one back injury or look at it as a one off insurance policy.

 Hi again,

Thankyou Chris, Bill confirms Confor foam in a email received off list. Its the impact absorbing foam that improves the outcome in an accident, not that dangerous, should never be in a glider, rebounding foam that we often see because it is sooo comfortable. Personally, I have no trouble sitting on the Confor on 8 hr flights in the back seat of the Twin Astir. That is with a parachute and I'm now a shade under 6 ft as my vertebrae column is shrinking due age and as a result, so to my instantaneous impact G tolerance should I suffer a heavy landing, another reason why older pilots need the Confor. We are adversely affected by heavy landings that don't even register with a young pilot.

In response to this email from Daryl,  I think the foam that Bill Whitehand arranged for the Beverley Fleet was Confor foam , not Dynafoam as stated, but its probably the same stuff.

Hi,

Try the following:

Dynafoam in GB, Sunmate in the USA. 1 inch Dynafoam cushion - ACFT Upholstery Services (08) 9353 3932

Bill Whitehand arranged the importation of same into WA when he was CFI of BSS. It has been fitted to the seat cushions of all our club gliders and many private owners took up the opportunity too. It has also been fitted to the pax seats of at least one Commuter Airline type over here and that required an Engineering Order that gives the process some importance in mainstream commercial ops.

This is so important that I will dump some notes I have on you all. They are condensed from a series of fine articles by Dr. Tony Segal that every pilot should read, if only to verify my understanding in the notes below taken from those articles:

Lumber Support - 10 1/2 inches x 4 inches x 1 inches, with the long edges next to the pilot chamfered off.

The parachute pack should be thin, flexible, and have a soft lower border. If the parachute pack has a hard lower border and ends part of the way up the spine, a stress concentration will be present at this level, and a spinal fracture may occur on accident impact

Each headrest must not be less than 250mm wide, must be faced with energy absorbing material, and must be capable of withstanding an ultimate load of 3kN acting normal to its face.

Each headrest must be located at eye-level, and such that it protects the occupant whether wearing a parachute or not, and that it does not foul the parachute during an emergency exit.

Note: It is recommended that where possible headrests are mounted integrally with seatbacks.

Can anybody give me a lead on where I can get hold of impact absorbing seat cushion foam?

Thanks,
