Robert,

If you signup to their forum, you'll see that they are in the process of releasing a Terrain Development Kit. It appears that creation of new terrain is entirely possible. In the meantime there are guidelines on the website for starting the process before the dev kit is available.

Tks for that Nick - I'll go see.

As for the question of whether terrain matters in using a simulator for XC training, I would suggest most definitely it does.

The places I see where a simulator could help in XC training are in improving decision making - which very much includes terrain issues such as paddock selection and 'can I make it across that unlandable area from this height?'. Given the sort of accidents that have been occurring with early XC pilots over the last couple of years, I think this could be a useful tool. On the other side, there is the danger that students will start taking more risks when flying the simulator and that this risk taking behaviour will be translated into the real from the virtual world. However, as Condor outputs an IGC file, this permits an instructor to go back over the flight with the student and such risk taking activity as marginal glides over unlandable terrain or attempts to thermal away from a low altitude can be discussed.
