TCAS display which runs for 8 hours on a pair of AA batteries.
(of course, it's only half the story. The other half is the transponder,
which is unlikely to run for 8 hours on a pair of AA batteries...!)
Is this ment to be used by gliders?
It's meant to be used by anything with wings.
It isn't designed for gliding, so my guess is that it'd have lots
of false-positives.
I've just heard about the FLARM device (http://www.flarm.com/index_en.html)
which requires to have such a device on all gliders in the area in order to be
effective (I suppose these are similar requirements to the above?).
No, the FLARM is completely self-contained -- no need for a separate
transponder.
It's going to be trialled at the Multiclass Nationals in Gawler, so
there ought to be lots of people prepared to attest to its merits
within the next few months.
