Another particularly annoying thing about the newer phone services is that they are increasingly more difficult to work with at a low level from the phone.
GSM stands out at having a somewhat open standard interface for sending and receiving SMS messages; CDMA etc have phone-manufacturer proprietary methods that typically require huge license fees to use. Why is the situation like this? Phone manufacturers and service providers like to lock down SMS and 3G services so that they get a slice of the action in commercial use of the network. Yet another reason why ringtones are evil.
