I have started to think my computor has caught some virus as all of the mails that I have been getting from this list seem to be repeats of ones that I have had before so in an attempt to break this cycle I am sending this note Re PPL medicals which shows that when asking glider pilots to pass such a thing it can bring its own problems.
Some ten or twelve years ago in an attempt to get an elderly member to re-consider whether he should continue to fly solo, it was suggested that he submit to a PPL medical, the thinking behind this was that he would be unlikely to pass given his age and it would allow him to retire from gliding with some dignity and without any bad feelings as he had been a member for many many years and we didn't want to appear too hard on him. A couple of weeks later back came our pilot with his PPL medical all signed and sealed. He now realised that some years ago he had held a powered licence and all he needed to do was pass a BFR and he could maybe even fly the tug. Our man then headed off to the flight school on the other side of the airport to book in.
He knew it would take several flights because of the elapsed time since his last flight but was prepared to have a go. His power instructor asked him for a look at his logbook which he duly handed over, to his suprise he noted that the last time our man had flown "powered" was when he got converted onto a four engine bomber in England just prior to the end of WW2.
Our man did eventually pass his BFR but time and cancer caught up with him.
This is supposed to be the festive season so lets festive.
K.
