I met and admired the deceased pilot's Alpin composite home built retractable engined single seat glider some years ago now when he was building it.  When I asked him about joining our gliding club, he told me that he was flying it under ultralight rules because he was "not given any help from GFA in building it."  It was recently advertised for sale in Soaring Australia.  We are expecting a factory built version for one of gliding club members so I hope it was not a structural failure.
